Jim Spear, fluent in Chinese and educated at the University of California, Berkeley, spent nearly 20 years doing business in China prior to moving full-time to his vacation house at Mutianyu Great Wall in 2005. With Liang Tang, his wife and partner, he founded China Bound to invest in sustainable tourism businesses in China.
Their award-winning work at The Schoolhouse and the Brickyard Retreat led to a consulting and design practice serving government and private clients across China.
Spear has completed over 30 residences for clients from around the world. His various projects have been featured in many Chinese and international publications, including Architectural Digest as well as professional publications, and are the heart of the monograph Great Wall Style. In 2018 Jim earned recognition in the prestigious international Architizer A+ Design Award in the hotels & resorts category.
Jim’s contributions to China were recognized with the Great Wall Friendship Award in 2014 from the Beijing government. Jim and Liang were named China Countryside Tourism Persons of the Year in 2015 at the Hangzhou Forum.
